Premier League giants told to make audacious swoop for Jurgen Klopp ...Middle East

Martin Keown has raised eyebrows off the charts with his pick for Manchester United’s next manager.

The Arsenal legend and talkSPORT host was questioning Ruben Amorim’s future at the club when he uttered two words no one was expecting – Jurgen Klopp.

Klopp to United?! Surely not…Getty Keown doesn’t think Amorim is the right man to stage United’s rebuildGetty

Speaking about the giants after their worst-ever Premier League season, Keown said: “The number of games that they’ve lost, I’m still concerned that this isn’t the right manager for Manchester United.

“It’s going to be a very interesting start to the season, they could do a lot worse than go and get Jurgen Klopp to manage their football club.

“I’m not trying to sensationalise but I believe that he might do an incredible job there, they need someone there with more experience than the current manager.

“Why not? He’s done it once before, we’re comparing their journey now, he’s done it once before but with a better foundation.”

Klopp, who stepped away from management last summer, is most famous for managing United’s arch rivals Liverpool, a divide that is so rarely bridged it hasn’t been done since Michael Owen in 2011.

The German coach helped dethrone United as England’s biggest club, restoring Liverpool from their nadir back to the top of the game with a Premier League and Champions League win.

Nine titles enhanced Klopp’s reputation as one of football’s great miracle workers, having also taken Borussia Dortmund from financial ruin to two Bundesliga titles and a Champions League final.

Those talents are exactly what Keown feels is needed at Old Trafford, and drew comparisons between United’s current malaise and Liverpool’s before Klopp’s arrival.

The subject was breached when discussing an £100million offer from Al Hilal for captain Bruno Fernandes.

talkSPORT understands that Saudi chiefs are increasingly confident about reaching an agreement with the player, and United have a decision to make.

Keown sees this as a potential turning point for the Red Devils, much like when Klopp used the £146million sale of Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona in 2018 to take his side to the next level.

“It depends if he’s to be used as a pawn to kickstart the club again,” Keown said of Fernandes.

“I look at what Jurgen Klopp did in 2018, Coutinho was allowed to be sold for an enormous amount of money and [Virgil] Van Dijk is still there all these years later and is a legend, that’s what they spent that money on the likes of him and Alisson [Becker].

“Maybe their need to sell a player is even greater here, I don’t think it should be about one player, they’ve got to look at the bigger picture and maybe make a deal now.

“It was interesting watching [Aston Villa manager Unai] Emery last summer when [Douglas] Luiz and [Moussa] Diaby were allowed to go for huge amounts of money, he rolled the dice.

“They’re going to have to compete but maybe they’re just putting it out there and making it so public that it’s almost like ‘let the player decide’ when they would really like the money.”

£100m for Fernandes would be United’s biggest ever sale

Giving his final verdict on the 30-year-old Portuguese midfielder, Keown said: “They need to sell Fernandes.

“I don’t believe when they get to where they want to get to – and you look at PSG now as the blueprint – he’s not going to be able to press like [Ousmane] Dembele and the way their midfield do.

“He’s the icing on the cake but even as a finished product I don’t think he’s good enough – sell him now.”
