CIF-SS Division 1 runner-up El Modena and Division 6 champion University will represent Orange County softball this week in the CIF Southern California Regional.
El Modena (22-9) earned the No. 1 seed in Division I while University (16-10) took the No. 3 seed in Division IV in the pairings announced Sunday by the CIF State office.
El Modena received a first-round bye in a five-team Division I and will play host to the Ayala-Poway winner in the semifinals on Thursday.
With many top teams opting out of the regional, El Modena’s decision to play stands out.
Vanguards coach Bobby Calderon said the decision was made well before his team’s 3-0 loss to Norco in the Division 1 final Saturday.
“(We want) to take advantage of everything that comes along with being part of CIF and go out and hopefully showcase our abilities as team,” he said.
University, which captured its first section title, opens Tuesday by playing host to No. 6 Marquez of Huntington Park (24-3) at 4 p.m.
Marquez earned the No. 1 seed in Division 2 in the L.A. City Section and lost to Taft 8-3 in the finals.
The regional finals are Saturday.
In 2023, Fullerton claimed the county’s first and only regional title by defeating Otay Ranch 7-0 in Division III.
