SECRETARIAT is considered by many as the greatest racing horse of all time, but his impact goes well beyond the races he competed in.
More than 660 foals were sired by Secretariat after his racing career ended, and his bloodline is present at the highest level today.
GettySecretariat has possibly made a bigger impact through his descendants than he did on the track[/caption] GettyEvery horse in this year’s Kentucky Derby was a descendant of Secretariat[/caption]Secretariat made a huge impact on horse racing, delivering one of the most iconic wins of all time at the 1973 Belmont Stakes.
Even though he retired that same year, his blood graces almost every major race each season.
This year, every single horse that competed in the Kentucky Derby was a direct descendant of Secretariat, showing just how special his genes were.
With so many horses descending from him, that means Secretariat is responsible for a massive amount of winnings in the 50 years since his retirement.
Secretariat’s direct foals accounted for millions of dollars as the first generation after him.
Lady’s Secret, one of Secretariat’s most successful foals, won 25 of her 45 races.
She brought in $3 million in earnings during her racing career.
However, she made even more money when sold to become a broodmare.
Lady’s Secret’s sale to Issam Fares in 1989 was worth $3.8 million.
While his foals made money, the big money has come from further descendants of Secretariat.
Sovereignty, this year’s Kentucky Derby winner, has competed in just six races in his career, but has already made $3.6 million.
He is a fifth generation descendant of Secretariat.
American Pharoah, the 2015 Triple Crown winner, is also five generations removed from Secretariat.
He was an extremely successful race horse, winning nine of his 11 races, bringing in $8.6 million in career winnings.
Even more impressive was his breeding deal, which came in the range of $60 million dollars.
That deal was massive, but it was soon surpassed by another Triple Crown descendant of Secretariat.

He is the only horse to win the Triple Crown without ever being beaten in his career.
Justify is a sixth-generation descendant of Secretariat, earning $3.2 million in his short career.
However, his breeding deal was the biggest of all time, surpassing American Pharoah’s.
Justify’s breeding deals sold for $60 million, but an additional $15 million was tacked on after his Triple Crown win at the Belmont Stakes in 2018.
It might be impossible to track down just how much money is directly tied to Secretariat’s bloodline, but it is certainly in the hundreds of millions.
There is a possibility that it even crosses the $1 billion threshold, but there is no telling how many horses would have to be tracked down in order to find out just how much in winnings came from Secretariat.
