Wrexham have had their incredible rise up the English Football League questioned by USA legend Landon Donovan.
The Red Dragons, who achieved a historic feat of back-to-back-to-back promotions last season, have been criticised for their huge spending in the lower leagues.
Donovan doesn’t believe in Wrexham’s fairytale rise under Reynolds and McElhenneySince being taken over by Hollywood star Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, the club have gone from strength to strength.
In a matter of three years, they have gone from non-league to the Championship – only one step away from the Premier League.
It is often dubbed as a fairytale story, but Donovan seemingly doesn’t believe in fairytales…
Speaking with ex-Everton goalkeeper Tim Howard, the American footballing icon had some honest thoughts on Wrexham.
“If you watch the show [Welcome to Wrexham], you think it’s some miracle, but it’s not a miracle,” he said on the ‘Unfiltered Soccer’ podcast.
“It’s an amazing story, but they have also spent at the top of every one of the leagues they’ve been in.”
When in the National League, Wrexham had a revenue of over £10million, which set a new record and was also higher than all League Two sides and most League One teams at the time.
And since the arrival of Reynolds and McElhenney in 2020, the club have spent over £5million on transfers.
While in League Two, they spent the most money by over £200k on their way to promotion, according to Transfermarkt.
Then, when in League One, they obliterated their club record signing, bringing in Sam Smith for a whopping £2million.
Wrexham have spent a lot on their way to three straight promotionsGettyTheir spending, alongside Tom Brady‘s Birmingham City, saw a record broken for the highest transfer fees spent in League One.
However, Wrexham were only third in the highest spenders list behind Birmingham and Huddersfield Town.
The finances involved in the Red Dragons have certainly given them an advantage, and Donovan believes that takes away from their ‘miracle’ rise through the divisions.
The USA legend, who made 157 appearances for his country and spent two loan spells at Everton in the Premier League, also questioned whether Wrexham can succeed in the second-tier.
Bringing up the benefits of having money to spend again, he said: “The question now is whether they can do it in the Championship.
“My first thought was no, but I did see a report last week that they were willing to offer a player £50,000 a week.
Howard thinks Wrexham could go on to reach the Premier LeagueUnfiltered Soccer / YouTube“They clearly have the money to do it, but are they going to take the risk? It’s a big risk now, and you could lose £30m or £40m and not get promoted. It’s going to be interesting to watch.”
Donovan’s ex-teammate and former Everton shot-stopper Howard is in a more optimistic mood when it comes to Wrexham’s chances.
Howard added: “They say the hardest jump in all of the promotions is from the Championship to the Premier League, because there is just more money in that league.
“Money makes the world go round when it comes to football or sports, and they [Wrexham] are pumping a tonne of money into that team.
“They’re just better and if they continue to do that, I think they could possibly do it [be promoted].”
Despite the argument over Wrexham’s finances being superior to almost all other teams below the Premier League, club adviser Peter Moore recently gave talkSPORT more inside details.
And Moore revealed that the Red Dragons will actually need further investment to remain sustainable.
His comments came after links to a move for Fulham captain Tom Cairney this summer, but an approach has since been ruled out.
