Students can now apply for openings on the Colorado Youth Advisory Council for the 2025-27 term.
The Colorado Legislature’s Youth Advisory Council gives a voice in lawmaking to teens ages 14-19, according to a council news release.
The 2025-27 term looks to fill two at-large seats for rural applicants, one opening for a member of the Ute Mountain Ute Tribe and State Senate district seats for 1, 4, 11, 12, 15, 17, 18, 19, 20, 22, 24, 26, 27, 29, 30, 32 and 35. The two-year term starts July 1, 2025, and goes through June 30, 2027.
District 1 and 17 cover parts of Weld County. To view senate districts, go to leg.colorado.gov/FindMyLegislator
Each year, council participants research, write and propose policy ideas and recommendations for legislators that address issues impacting youth across Colorado, the release said. Recommendations include amending current laws or endorsing new ones.
Colorado Youth Advisory Council members have inspired new laws that address issues like food waste in schools, substance abuse, youth mental health and more, according to the release.
Selected students gain leadership and negotiation skills, experience working with diverse groups of people, build relationships in government, policy and advocacy and learn about the lawmaking process, public speaking, research, outreach and more.
Those interested in filling the open seats must apply by Thursday, June 5. For more information or to apply, go to coyac.org/apply.
