GLOBAL PHENOMENON
Tiny homes have become a global phenomenon, sweeping the world with the promise of a low carbon and simple lifestyle.
Tiny homes typically range from 100 to 400 square feet and are beloved by homeowners seeking to downsize, add extra space, or create a cozy vacation retreat.
The US Sun has previously spoken to the founder of the tiny home movement, Jay Shafer.
What is a tiny home?
Technically, a tiny home is any house measuring under 400 square feet.
Many tiny homes are built on trailers so they can be towed anywhere, and some are converted from old school buses or vans.
Each state has its own rules about tiny homes, but, generally, they are not subject to the same taxes as regular homes.
However, Alaska, Iowa, Louisiana, North Dakota, New Jersey, New York, Wisconsin, and West Virginia have made tiny homes illegal as permanent dwellings.
Shafer first came up with the idea when he was homeless in 1999, triggering him to build the “Tumbleweed” house in Iowa.
Zoning officials told him he would be able to camp out in his backyard on a property he purchased for just $50,000.
“I really lucked out,” Shafer exclusively told The U.S. Sun.
Shafer said the movement was “created in direct response to what had become and remains, extensive unlawful enforcement of the IRC guidelines as law.”
In other tiny home news, a 70-year-old woman built a tiny home in a year for under $20,000 – it’s “increased my quality of life.”
Plus, a couple built their tiny home for under $40,000 – it took them 10 months and a key feature makes it possible to travel with it.
