The NBA’s third all-time leading scorer has had quite the journey since retirement.
Karl Malone, nicknamed “The Mailman,” is the best player in Utah Jazz history and is one of the better stars the entire Association has ever seen.
Malone will be forever beloved in Salt Lake City and the entire state of UtahGettyHe was a two-time MVP, 14-time All-Star, 14-time All-NBA and even led the Jazz to two Finals appearances.
Only LeBron James and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar have scored more points than Malone in NBA history.
Malone and teammate John Stockton ushered in the most successful period of basketball in Jazz history.
They were teammates for a ridiculous 18 seasons.
Something that is very unlikely to happen again.
Malone began his career in 1985 and retired after the 2004 season.
He played his first 17 seasons with Stockton in Salt Lake City and his last season in Los Angeles as a Laker.
In total, Malone made a little over $104 million in his 18-year career.
In both Finals appearances with Utah, Malone and the Jazz fell to Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls in back-to-back seasons in 1997 and 1998, both in six games.
He was on the receiving end of one of the most brutal one-liners in NBA history in Game 1 of the 1997 finals, from Scottie Pippen of all people.
Malone was one of the most dominant players in the history of the NBAGetty Malone and Stockton formed one of the best duos in the history of basketballGetty“I had my brother in town. My brother was a postman,” the Bulls star later revealed to ESPN
“So, Karl Malone is at the line. I was a pretty good friend with Karl actually, so I just walked by and said, ‘The Mailman doesn’t deliver on Sunday.’ To this day, I think that is the greatest line in basketball.”
Malone was heading to the free-throw line with a chance to seal the game for the Jazz. He missed both.
He also made it to the 2004 Finals as a member of the Lakers, but was more of a reserve that season, when they got swept 4-0 by the Detroit Pistons.
While he finished his career without a ring, Malone still owns one of the most prolific careers of all-time.
The Mailman delivered on the court time and time again, but eventually moved on to his other passions.
