Piastri proud of 'perfect' Spanish GP weekend: 'Can't ask for more' ...Middle East

Sport by : (F1 News) -

Oscar Piastri claimed that nothing could have gone better throughout his entire Spanish Grand Prix weekend, as he dominated proceedings to win the race.

While chaos ensued all around, the Australian driver stayed out of trouble and crossed the finish line in first after 66 gruelling laps of the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.

Piastri got off the line superbly well, in part thanks to last-minute advice on clutch engagement by his race engineer Tom Stallard. He didn't have to look back from that point onwards, keeping teammate Lando Norris at more than an arm's length and only ceding the lead once to the Red Bull of Max Verstappen, who was on a different strategy and not in contention for the race lead.

The 24-year-old has now extended his lead in the Drivers' Championship to ten points, ahead of Norris who secured a one-two for McLaren in Spain.

Perfect Execution, From Start To Finish

Speaking to Sky Sports F1 straight after the Grand Prix, Piastri stated that he was incredibly proud of himself and his team for maximising the best possible result on the weekend.

He said: "Very proud, very satisfied. I don't have much more to add. It's been a really good weekend from basically start to finish.

"FP2 to now, it's been pretty much perfect. We executed everything we needed to today. A great start. Managed the first stint well. Good pit stops. Stuck to our guns on our strategy.

"We executed it pretty much perfectly. I can't ask for more," Piastri exclaimed.

The McLaren driver also praised his team for helping find extra performance that gave him and the Woking-based outfit an edge during qualifying and race day.

He added: "I think this weekend in particular we've done a very good job of finding every bit we can. I think Friday we thought quite a few teams were in the mix with us.

"After Saturday, I think we felt like we'd found some more. That was very satisfying."

"I'm not going to comment"

Despite the domination of Piastri and McLaren, the main talking point after the Spanish Grand Prix was a collision between Max Verstappen and George Russell. Many believe that the clash was a deliberate act of retaliation by the former.

Naturally, Piastri was asked about his opinion on the incident between the Red Bull and Mercedes. Norris had refused to answer any questions regarding the clash outright, but stated that he thinks many should "know the answer".

Piastri declined any comment on it too, stating that he needed more context to formulate a well-rounded opinion on the matter.

He said: "I need a bit more context around it.

"I obviously saw Max went off at Turn 2.  I didn't really understand what went on at Turn 5, I didn't know if it was a misunderstanding.

"I don't really know what happened apart from they crashed into each other. I'm not going to comment on something I don't know about," concluded Piastri.
