Summertime calls for hitting up outdoor flea markets, garage sales and thrift stores. So we tapped Windy City Rehab’s Alison Victoria for her dos and don’ts for discovering unique and vintage decor — something she has a knack and deep passion for.
“Antiques carry stories, energy and put history into a home,” she says. “When I find the right piece, it feels like fate. It’s less about shopping and more about discovering something with soul.”

Below, take note of the pro’s foolproof rules for hunting down timeless treasures.
How do you incorporate antiques into your space without going overboard?
Courtesy of Alison VictoriaToo many antiques [will make your home] feel like a museum. The magic is in the mix — blending old and new so it feels curated, not cluttered.
Can you offer any tips for before and during treasure hunting?
Courtesy of Alison VictoriaDo a little research so you know what styles and price points to expect, but also stay open. The best pieces are often the ones you didn’t even know you were looking for. Stay calm, focus on one category at a time and give yourself permission to walk away if it’s too much — the right piece will always find you.
What are your most memorable antique finds?
Courtesy of Alison VictoriaI have a pair of Murano glass sconces I found in Paris — they’re delicate, dramatic and dripping with character. I didn’t know where I’d put them, but I knew they were coming with me, and since finding them, they’ve been a part of every home I’ve lived in.
Where do you suggest looking online if you can’t shop IRL?
