The Colorado Buffaloes product was the fifth quarterback taken in last month’s draft.
And Sanders wasn’t even the first signal-caller taken by the Browns, who picked left-handed quarterback Dillon Gabriel in the third round.
The son of Deion Sanders will have a battle to not just earn playing time, but also simply make the roster, per an NFL insider.
NFL reporter James Palmer spoke about Sanders’ future with the Browns.
“Fifth-round picks are not a lock to make the roster, so no, I don’t think he is 100 percent a lock,” Palmer said on a Bleacher Report livestream.
“I think he has one of the highest-selling jerseys in the NFL right now.
“I think that sometimes play a part. Popularity.
“I hate to say it, but it does often times, especially in the eyes of owners.
“But, you don’t draft a guy in the third round and cut him.”
Sanders will compete with fellow rookie Gabriel, but also two veterans in Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett.
Cleveland does have a fifth quarterback on their roster in Deshaun Watson, but he is expected to miss the 2025 season as he recovers from surgery on a torn Achilles tendon.
Palmer did go on to say that he believes that Sanders will make the 53-man roster, but he hasn’t put a lock on it.
“I think one of the two of Kenny Pickett or Joe Flacco will make the time. There’s no advantage will make the time. There’s no advantage between the two veterans, I don’t think they’re both here,” he said.
“I think Shedeur is not a lock to make the roster.

Sanders and the rest of the Browns players are taking part in OTAs, which will end on June 5.
Cleveland will then get to work at mandatory minicamp from June 10-12.
Training camp will then begin in late July.
The Browns are coming off a massively disappointing 3-14 season.
