AtkinsRéalis wins $450m contract to deliver the G7’s first small reactor ...Middle East

AtkinsRéalis company Candu Energy has won a C$450m execution contract from Ontario Power Generation (OPG) to build the first of four planned small modular reactors (SMRs) at the Darlington Nuclear Generating Station on the shore of Lake Ontario around 70km east of Toronto.

The Ontario provincial government says the 300MW BWRX-300 unit will be the first operational SMR among the G7 nations, and will power 300,000 homes from 2030, when it’s scheduled to be finished.

Run by OPG, a province-owned power company, the Darlington site is an existing nuclear power station with four Candu reactors giving a combined generating capacity of 3.5GW.

AtkinsRéalis will provide project management, licensing, engineering, design, procurement, construction support and commissioning for the new SMR.

‘First new nuclear build in 30 years’

“Our involvement in the G7’s first grid-scale SMR and Canada’s first nuclear new build in roughly 30 years reaffirms our leading position in the global nuclear energy market, for both large and small reactor technologies,” said president and chief executive Ian L. Edwards.

AtkinsRéalis has been the architect-engineer on the Darlington New Nuclear Project alliance team since 2023, working with GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy and Aecon Kiewit Nuclear Partners.

Site preparation undertaken in an earlier validation-phase contract has been finished on time and budget.

‘Power demand to surge by 75%’

The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission issued a license to build the first of four planned SMRs at the Darlington site in April, and the Ontario government gave its final approval for it on 8 May.

“Ontario’s power demand is expected to surge by 75% by 2050 and we’ll need all sources of cleaner power to meet the need, including large and small nuclear reactor technology,” said Joe St. Julian, president of nuclear at AtkinsRéalis.
