Oliver struggled in school because of his dyslexia, and he left at age 16. He enrolled in Westminster Catering College, then became a pastry chef at Antonio Carluccio's restaurant on Neal Street in London. There, he developed his skill and love for Italian cuisine, which would serve him quite well later.

What Is Jamie Oliver's Net Worth in 2025?
Despite his restaurant closures, he stays wealthy thanks to cookbook sales, TV appearances and series and even fictional novels for kids. Additionally, his brand partnerships, from U.K. supermarkets Tesco to Tefal cookware and even selling snacks in Shell stations, add to the bottom line.
He told Women's Weekly of his efforts post-2019, "Loads of people don't want to talk about failure. It's so important to talk about failure. It's so important to talk about moving on. No one gets it right all the time ... I think I am doing what any good person that loves what they do does, which is, dust down, regather your thoughts and start again."
Not yet, and he said that his own son shamed him for it.

Does Jamie Oliver Still Have Any Restaurants?
"I appreciate how difficult this is for everyone affected," Oliver said in a statement at the time. "We launched Jamie's Italian in 2008 with the intention of positively disrupting mid-market dining in the U.K. High Street, with great value and much higher quality ingredients, best-in-class animal welfare standards and an amazing team who shared my passion for great food and service. And we did exactly that."
"It's all the food of my childhood. I was working professionally, honestly, truly, from the age of 13, at weekends and all through my summer holidays," he told Women's Weekly. "So it's really the food from my age of 13 to 18. It's kind of the greatest hits of the '80s."
Oliver told The Guardian in 2020 that the closure of his Jamie's Italian chain restaurants was a sign of more to come industry-wide.
He added, "If you look at everyone doing well at the moment, they are basically prepping and shifting fairly low-quality food. So the thing I'm most worried about at the moment is the actual business of cooking and service is hugely under threat. Because it doesn't pay the bills to care."
Additionally, Food Republic pointed out that Oliver's eateries, and many other U.K. restaurants, were also impacted by Brexit in 2017. The value of the British pound took a beating and imports became more expensive, leading to shrinking margins. A dozen of Oliver's chain locations closed in 2018, and he used $16 million of his own money to keep the rest alive at the time.
How Many Restaurants Has Jamie Oliver Owned?
At his peak as a restaurateur, Oliver owned a whopping 86 restaurants worldwide, 25 of which were in the U.K.
Oliver launched his Fifteen restaurant, a nonprofit dedicated to training 15 disadvantaged young adults at a time to become chefs, in 2002. The restaurant and its efforts were featured in the TV show Jamie's Kitchen, and bookings for the charitable endeavor were solid for more than a decade, according to The Guardian. Sadly, it was one of the casualties of Oliver's restaurant empire closing, and it shuttered with his other restaurants in 2019.
How Much Is Jamie Oliver Being Paid for MasterChef?
Oliver reportedly signed a deal for $2 million to replace the late Jock Zonfrillo on Masterchef Australia in 2023. His pay includes accommodations for him and his family in the Land Down Under.
His pay is extra good when you consider he was only on the set for two weeks—though for him, it wasn't about the money at all.
Oliver returned for Season 16 in 2024, though his salary for that isn't publicly known (including whether it was included in his 2023 contract). There's no word yet on the judges for Season 17 in 2025, so it remains to be seen if he'll reup this particularly lucrative deal—especially now that he has a new eatery to run in London.
How Much Does Jamie Oliver Make Per Year?
Oliver's annual income varies depending on how business is going and what projects he releases that year. That said, here's what we do know: The Guardian reported that Oliver and his wife, Jools, paid themselves $8.96 million in dividends in 2022, up from $7.38 million in 2021. His income has risen steadily since the collapse of his eatery empire. In 2023, they reportedly gave themselves a pay cut in dividends, taking just $3.29 million.
