College Football Hall of Fame changes eligibility criteria, clearing way for Mike Leach ...Middle East

Mike Leach will be eligible for College Football Hall of Fame consideration in 2027.

On Thursday, the National Football Foundation announced a notable change to the eligibility criteria for coaches to be considered for induction. The NFF has revised the minimum career winning percentage required for coaching eligibility from .600 to .595 beginning with the 2027 ballot.

The 60% career winning percentage requirement had been keeping Leach off the ballot. The late coach of Texas Tech, Washington State and Mississippi State posted a record of 158-107 in his career, giving him a 59.6% career winning percentage.

Leach tragically passed away in December 2022. Since his death, many prominent figures in the college football community have lobbied for him to be eligible for the College Football Hall of Fame.

The NFF is committed to preserving the integrity and prestige of the NFF College Football Hall of Fame,” NFF President & CEO Steve Hatchell said in a released statement. “This adjustment reflects thoughtful dialogue with leaders across the sport and allows us to better recognize coaches whose contributions to the game extend beyond a narrow statistical threshold.

Based on public support for Leach to make the Hall among media members and his coaching peers, one would expect him to be inducted as part of the Class of 2027.
