BREAKING: A deal is not done just yet, but long-time @UVABaseball head coach Brian O’Connor has emerged as the clear-cut front runner to be the next head coach at @HailStateBB. His addition would be a blockbuster get for MSU AD Zac Selmon. #HailState pic.twitter.com/ZQdL0Z2Hvc
— Kendall Rogers (@KendallRogers) May 29, 2025O’Connor, who turned 54 in April, would be a splash hire for MSU. After serving as an assistant at alma mater Creighton (1993-95) and then Notre Dame (1995-2003), he took the Virginia head coaching job and has had a highly successful tenure in Charlottesville.
In his tenure, O’Connor has a .705 winning percentage with an overall record of 885-370-2. The Cavaliers, or Hoos as they often call themselves, have reached the College World Series 7 times under O’Connor (2009, ’11, ’14, ’15, ’21, ’23, ’24). O’Connor led the program to its only national championship in 2015, a year after finishing as runner-up.
Virginia finished 32-18 in 2025, missing the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2019. Mississippi State fired Chris Lemonis on April 28 when the Bulldogs were 25-19 overall and 7-14 in SEC play. Under interim head coach Justin Parker, MSU finished 34-21 with a 15-15 regular-season SEC record. The Bulldogs are the 3-seed in the Tallahassee Regional, hosted by No. 9 overall seed Florida State.
