Blessings my fellow anglers! Hope that you all had a restful Memorial Day Weekend. Thanks to all who paid the ultimate sacrifice to protect our freedoms, many of which we take for granted. One being able to fish when and where we want and then write freely about our experiences on the water.
Emily Lake: Lake Emily is a reservoir located just 3 miles from Willits. Fishermen will find a variety of fish including rainbow trout, crappie, largemouth bass, catfish, and bluegill there. Whether you’re drifting with a float tube or “yak”, or fishing from the shore your chances of getting a bite here are good. So grab your favorite fishing rod and reel, and head out to Lake Emily. F.Y.I. A good friend of mine told me that there are very few anglers fishing the lake right now and your chances of hooking in to a few is real good right now..
Mendocino Coast: The fishing off of our coast has been a mixed bag. Bottom fishing for rock fish and Lingcod has continued to fair. Also when the ocean lays down and the water is flat, the Pacific Halibut have been biting. There have been a few reports of Halibut being caught in the 20 to 30 pound range. With the warmer weather we are having right now, the water temperature should move up to about 52 – 54 degrees. This will make the bait fish active which in-turn will start to get the bite going. Then, the idea is, if you can adjust what you’re fishin’ for after you get out and read the water . You could bring in a limit of halibut and rock fish.
Clear Lake: What a crazy weekend! Drop-shotting and throwin’ plastics have been working the best for me. Also, anglers that have found some clear water have caught some nice bass sight fishing or crankin’ a shad or ayu colored crank bait, rip pin’ it. A few bass have hooked fishin’ a frog over the weed and muck matts in the early morning hours.
Lake Mendocino: The bass fishin’ on our hometown lake has continued to be fairly good. Like all of our bass producing lakes, the early morning hours is the best time to get out on the water. The top water bite is starting at dawn to about 7:30 a.m. Then move to 15 -20 feet of water and drop-shot or slow drag a baby brushhog. Some of my friends have also been hooking into some nice bass fishing a swim bait, moving it along the bottom.
Lake Pillsbury: I have been told that the Lake County/Upper Lake road is full of pot holes. The road out of Potter Valley is full of washboards and is pretty bad right now. So, take it very slow and easy ! The good news is that lately, the bass fishin’ has been excellent. Top water early until about 8 a.m. has been working well. After that move out to the deeper water and go drop-shottin’. The bite is done by 10 a.m. Some trout are being caught trolling along the west side of the lake during the early mornings and late evenings.
* One down, two to go! The first of the major summer holidays has come and gone. With of the busy-ness of our water ways during the summer months, the best times to fish will be early in the morning and the last two hours of daylight. Remember to be safe and be kind. Always watch out for the other guy. They aren’t watching out for you. And, please practice catch and release so that the next generation can experience fishing.
