BROOKFIELD — The district’s former football field is now under new ownership, thanks to an auction that ended last week.
The Brookfield Board of Education unanimously approved the sale of its former football field, George E. Nichols Field, which sold for $196,000 during an auction through Basinger Auction Service May 19. A 10% buyer’s premium made the purchase cost $215,600.
It was bought by Mohammad Matariya.
J. Paul Basinger, the auctioneer who oversaw the auction, explained that bidding for the property started at $1, with eight bidders fighting for it.
“When the bidding started to close, the bidding was only at $60,000,” Basinger said. “Over the next 20 minutes, bidding continued because we gave them another few minutes to think about it, and it went to $196,000.”
Basinger, whose company deals in both auctions and real estate, deemed the sale a testament to how well auctions worked, adding that if they put an asking price of $215,000 on the property, it would have never sold.
District Treasurer Jordan Weber said the school board was “extremely pleased” with the auction’s outcome, including the sale of the property and several sets of the field’s bleachers, which had two sets sell to High Steel Rodeo for $30,792. The final set went to the Sheakleyville Community Volunteer Fire Department for $22,600.
“Yeah, the auditor’s site had it at ($60,000). Obviously it’s a very unique piece of land, for a very unique purpose; the school board itself, we’ve never been concerned with what the quote value is on it — we knew it had a lot of pros and cons,” Weber said. “It’s a flat piece of land with access to a road that heavy traffic or heavy trucks can go on. We thought it might end up going to someone who is going to be looking to expand their own amount of industry, you know, warehouse space, etc.”
Weber deemed the sale a “refocusing” of funds.
“All the proceeds from the sale of the land, which will run through Associated Federal Title in Boardman, and the separate sales from the bleachers, all that money is going into a capital project fund,” he said. “It will go primarily towards turf and any other needed items at the new football field. So kind of doing a swap from the old to the new.”
