ESPN’s Pelton: Suns’ Tyus Jones enters free agency with much to prove ...Middle East

Phoenix Suns point guard Tyus Jones enters free agency this offseason with much to prove after a relatively disappointing season.

The 10th-year guard signed a one-year, $3.3 million contract last offseason with the hope he’d have a breakout year and provide stability to the Suns’ point guard position.

ESPN’s Kevin Pelton released his NBA free agent rankings for this offseason and ranked Jones 25th.

Adding Jones on a minimum contract didn’t prove the coup the Suns had hoped for last summer. He produced as expected, shooting 41% on 3-pointers and posting his usual high assist-to-turnover (4.7), yet he couldn’t help Phoenix’s offense deliver on its potential. For all their talent, the Suns were barely better than league average in offensive rating, and Jones started just four games after the All-Star break. He might need to sign another short-term contract to rebuild his value.

Jones underwhelmed, leaving question marks about his future in Phoenix for different reasons. It was expected a strong year with play him out of Phoenix’s range to re-sign him considering their cap restrictions.

Jones went from averaging 12 points, 7.3 assists in 29.3 minutes per game during his one season with Washington in 2023-24 to 10.2 points and 5.3 assists in 26.8 minutes per game for the Suns. His shooting fell off from 49% to 45% overall.

He would eventually go on to lose his starting role to two-way player Collin Gillespie near the end of the season, averaging just 21.5 minutes per game in March, and only 20.0 in April.

Going into his age-29 season, Jones now enters free agency with surprisingly low stock.

Should the Suns bring back Jones, it would need to be on another short-term, team-friendly deal due to their salary cap constraints.

The Suns have several question marks going into this offseason, with Kevin Durant’s and Bradley Beal’s future in question.
