COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) – First responders and other Ohioans from Dayton to Mount Gilead are expected to line overpasses and residential roads Wednesday to pay tribute to a sheriff's deputy who was fatally shot on Memorial Day.
According to the Big Walnut Joint Fire District in Marengo, a coming home procession will begin in Montgomery County about 10:30 a.m. for Morrow County Deputy Daniel Sherrer. The procession began at approximately 10:50 a.m.
Pedestrian struck on State Route 161 suffers life-threatening injuriesSherrer, 31, was involved in a shootout at a residence south of Marengo, a small community some 35 miles north of Columbus, where he responded to a domestic disturbance call and found himself alone confronting an armed man.
His body was transferred to the Montgomery County coroner after his death. The route to Mount Gilead is about 120 miles and includes portions of Interstates 70 and 71, which converge in Columbus.

The caravan will then head north on I-71 to State Route 61 toward Mount Gilead, where it will end at Snyder Funeral Home sometime around noon.
Details of Sherrer's funeral have yet to be announced. Gov. Mike DeWine has ordered flags flown at half staff until that day.
Morrow County has about 35,000 residents, and Sherrer had served as a deputy since 2021. He is survived by his parents.
The suspect in the case is Brian Michael Wilson, 53, of Marengo, who remains hospitalized with injuries from the shootout and is in the custody of the Delaware County Sheriff's Department, which has taken point in the investigation.
Wilson is facing an initial charge of aggravated murder.
