Paul Finebaum questions Gunner Stockton, says he’s ‘underwhelmed’ by Georgia QB ...Middle East

News by : (SATURDAY DOWN SOUTH) -

Paul Finebaum is not a believer in new Georgia quarterback Gunner Stockton.

Stockton is expected to take over as UGA’s starter this fall as the program replaces Carson Beck, who is now at Miami. Stockton played for UGA at the end of last season, but struggled in the Bulldogs’ College Football Playoff loss to Notre Dame.

In an appearance with ESPN’s Matt Barrie this week, Finebaum cited Stockton’s lackluster game against the Fighting Irish as a big reason why he’s “underwhelmed” with Georgia’s quarterback situation going into the year.

“I know the team coalesced around him after the SEC Championship Game,” Finebaum said. “But I was underwhelmed by what I saw from Gunner Stockton in the Sugar Bowl loss to Notre Dame. Kirby Smart has been steadfast in his support. He really doesn’t have another option until next year when the top recruit in the country comes in. So I’m not happy with what I see [with Georgia].”

UGA fell to Notre Dame 23-10 in the CFP last season, ending its 2024 campaign a couple steps short of its ultimate goal. Stockton was called upon to replace Beck, who suffered a season-ending injury against Texas in the SEC title game. Against Notre Dame, Stockton completed 20-of-34 passes for 234 yards and 1 touchdown. The Bulldogs went just 2-for-12 on third down in the loss.

Here’s a clip of Finebaum’s comments:
