Owen Farrell wants Premiership return – so where could he end up? ...Middle East

This is on the strict assumption the 33-year-old former England back is still playing at or near the peak of the powers that made him captain of his country at the 2023 World Cup.

England head coach Steve Borthwick rightly said kind things about Farrell when he effectively quit Test rugby by leaving for Racing 92 in mid-2024.

Farrell changes a team’s dynamics by his very presence, so Borthwick would have to be certain he would enhance England’s potential for success in the 2027 World Cup.

If Farrell genuinely fled to France to spare his young family the hurtful criticism last time round, there is little reason to expect it to be any different now, so it would need a change of heart to re-engage with the Test arena.

Whether or not that is the case, he would be a great signing for the Tigers if he retains the mental and physical edge, including top-notch goal-kicking, that built a magnificent career of 112 England caps and three British & Irish Lions tours, and multiple titles at Saracens.

Among the seven other Premiership clubs – and with the exception of Sale Sharks, Northampton Saints and Harlequins who have Ford, Fin Smith and Marcus Smith respectively – most when looked at objectively would be glad of Farrell’s talent and leadership.

He was just 13 years old when he was first seen at the club at the side of his father, Andy, who joined from Wigan in mid-2005.

The club’s director of rugby Mark McCall yesterday rejected any notion of a fight for his signature, and simply stated that, as far as he is aware, Farrell has 14 months left on his contract in Paris.

A groin operation, a leg injury and most recently a head knock have restricted Farrell to 17 appearances for Racing and a middling influence at best.

When Andy Farrell named the British & Irish Lions’ squad, he left Owen out while leaving the door open if fitness and form justified it.

And what of Farrell’s longer-term plans? McCall chose his words carefully, saying he would be “absolutely amazed” if Farrell did not end up as a coach – “he has a great IQ, and a passion and love for it, like his dad” – but while Saracens are about to appoint a new attack coach in succession to Kevin Sorrell, who informed the club he was leaving three months ago, McCall said that person would not be Farrell.

McCall did say Farrell would probably have to build experience somewhere else before any chance of working with Saracens’ first team, and that could be done while playing, and “of course we’d want to be a club who would lend a hand to help him on the path”. But that is no confirmation of a destination.
