Lucknow Super Giants review (5/10): Pant’s flops, hidden gem Rathi, injuries standout ...Middle East

IPL 2025 didn’t turn out to be what the Lucknow Super Giants would have expected. With 6 wins froim 14 matches, Rishabh Pant-led LSG finished at the seventh position on the points table. The team’s campaign was marred by multiple setbacks – captain Pant’s poor form, injuries to bowlers, attitude issues of a wicket-taking bowler, flawed auction strategies among others.

After letting go of KL Rahul, LSG broke the bank to fetch Rishabh Pant for a whopping Rs 27 crore. However, the LSG captain hardly managed to justify his hefty price tag, scoring just two half-centuries in the season. However, there aren’t only negatives to talk about the side this season. LSG unearthed a hidden gem in the form of Digvesh Rathi who went on to become the side’s leading wicket-taker, unexpectedly.

LSG’s most glaring failure came in the form of captain Pant. In 14 matches, the southpaw only managed to score 269 runs in 13 innings, averaging 24.45. Nicholas Pooran, the team’s highest retention (Rs 21 crore), had a great start to the season but simply failed to be consistent.

LSG’s bowling attack suffered the maximum damage. They were without the services of two of their retained bowlers for nearly halfway through the tournament. While Mohsin Khan was ruled out, Mayank Yadav managed to survive for just one game before he got injured again.

Amid poor form of batters and battling injuries, Pant did a rather decent job in captaining the side and ensuring that a sane playing XI was fielded for each game.

Highs

Formidable opening duo of Mitchell Marsh and Aiden Markram – a bright start for LSG and a good combination in the future Consistent Ayush Badoni turns out to be LSG’s MVP in IPL 2025 LSG find new bowling weapon in Digvesh Rathi who fared much better than Ravi Bishnoi

Lows

Captain Pant’s miserable form and inconsistency Pooran fails to live up to expections, lets down the top-order Flawed retention strategy by retaining injury-prone pacers like Mayank Yadav and Mohsin Khan Shamar Joseph – the only overseas pacer originally in LSG’s squad – benched throughout the tournament

What’s in store for IPL 2026?

LSG desperately need to fix their pace unit ahead of the next season. It could start by getting rid of Mayank and Mohsin and look for more sustainable options. There’s nothing wrong with the squad as such, barring the form of captain Pant and Pooran.
