Martins in the saddle with Williams in Spanish GP FP1 ...Middle East

Sport by : (F1 News) -

Williams junior Victor Martins will step into the Formula 1 spotlight this weekend as he makes his official F1 debut during Free Practice at the Spanish Grand Prix.

The 23-year-old Frenchman will take over Alexander Albon’s FW47 in Friday’s opening session at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.

Martins’ outing is part of the sport’s rookie mandate requiring every team to field a young driver in each one of its cars in at least two FP1 sessions over the course of the. Martins follows fellow Williams protégé Luke Browning, who made his F1 debut at the Bahrain GP earlier this year.

A Big Step on Familiar Ground

“I’m super happy to be taking the wheel of the FW47 for the first time in Barcelona!” commented Martins said. “It will be an incredible experience to drive for the team.

“I’m working hard to prepare as much as possible to maximise my time in the car and make it a valuable session for myself and the team.”

Barcelona is a fitting debut stage for Martins, a track that he knows well from his junior career and which also hosted a recent test of Williams’ 2023 FW45 machine – an outing that helped him build familiarity with the team alongside Browning earlier this year.

Williams Sporting Director Sven Smeets praised Martins’ preparation and development within the team’s setup.

“We’re proud that Victor will be taking part in his first Formula 1 session with Williams Racing in Barcelona,” Smeets said. “He continues to demonstrate that he is a talented driver, and this session is an important step forward in his career as part of the Academy.

“His participation in our TPC [Testing of Previous Cars] programme and simulator work in Grove have prepared him well and we look forward to seeing him in the garage this weekend.”

Momentum Amid Misfortune

Martins, who joined the Williams Driver Academy on 31 March after two seasons in Alpine’s young driver academy, has a strong junior pedigree. He won the Formula Renault Eurocup in 2020 and clinched the FIA Formula 3 title in 2022.

Currently in his third Formula 2 campaign with ART Grand Prix, Martins has shown speed but been repeatedly hampered by misfortune. He sits eighth in the standings after a frustrating run that’s seen him robbed of results by factors outside his control.

He was due to start from pole position in the cancelled Melbourne feature race and was taken out in Monaco while attempting an overtake for the lead, triggering a dramatic pile-up.

Despite the setbacks, Martins remains highly regarded within the paddock, and his upcoming FP1 session offers a chance to showcase his potential on F1 machinery’s biggest stage.

As Williams looks to develop its next generation of talent, all eyes will be on Martins when he rolls out of the Barcelona garage for his long-awaited Grand Prix debut.
