The FBI's No. 2 official said Monday the agency had either reopened or shifted resources toward "a number of cases of potential public corruption," including the leaked Supreme Court draft decision on abortion and an incident involving cocaine found at the White House during former President Biden's term.
"Shortly after swearing in, [FBI Director Kash Patel] and I evaluated a number of cases of potential public corruption that, understandably, have garnered public interest," Dan Bongino, the FBI's deputy director, said in a post on X.
"We made the decision to either re-open, or push additional resources and investigative attention, to these cases," he added. "These cases are the DC pipe bombing investigation, the cocaine discovery at the prior administration’s White House, and the leak of the Supreme Court Dobbs case."
The first case apparently refers to the investigation into pipe bombs placed outside the Republican National Committee (RNC) and the Democratic National Committee (DNC) a day before the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol.
The FBI in January said they were seeking new leads in the investigation.
Bongino also referenced the leaked draft opinion in the case Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization, which eventually led to the overturning of Roe v. Wade, the landmark ruling that legalized abortion on the federal level in 1973.
The Supreme Court released a report on its own investigation into the incident in 2023, concluding that it had failed to identify who was behind the leak.
Bongino also said the agency was looking into the discovery of cocaine at the White House when Biden was president in 2023. The incident quickly became political fodder for Republicans heading into the presidential election year and led to calls for accountability from GOP members of Congress.
"I receive requested briefings on these cases weekly and we are making progress," Bongino said. "If you have any investigative tips on these matters that may assist us then please contact the FBI."
Bongino's announcement comes as both he and Patel have come under pressure from the MAGA wing amid accusations they haven't sufficiently addressed concerns over the deep state or discovered evidence of popular conspiracy theories.
