Ever since the end of pandemic restrictions, Six Flags Discovery Kingdom has been looking for ways to bring people closer to the animals.
Following in the footsteps of the Oakland Zoo, which has a long history of prioritizing animal welfare and connecting the dots between education and conservation, Discovery Kingdom is doing what’s best for the animals by encouraging positive interactions with guests.
“For people to understand and appreciate the animal world and welfare, they need an experience that deepens their interest,” said Six Flags spokesperson Sara Gorgon.
And while animal performances may be a thing of the past, animal interactions will be front and center at Discovery Kingdom this summer.
The Vallejo theme park officially opens for the season May 23 and will be open daily through Aug. 10.
Check out the gators at Alligator Aisle, or the 2-year-old cheetah cubs at Cheetah Creek. There’s a rainforest trail and seal cove, sharks and stingrays, Siberian and Bengal tigers, grey wolves, lions, giraffes and more on display for guests at the park.
For an additional fee, there are several experiences that bring folks up close to the animals.
The paint-and-create experience ($64.99) allows kids to hold a canvas and pick out colors while bottlenose dolphins hold the paintbrush and create their masterpiece.
The wildlife adventure tour ($99.99) provides several stops for behind-the-scenes interactions with land and marine animals.
The backstage safari pass ($59.99) allows guests to interact with exotic animals.
There are also opportunities to feed giraffes and lions, as well as other interactions that the park hopes will inspire folks’ interest in animals and lead to a better understanding of conservation efforts.
“The interactions showcase natural movements and behaviors,” Gorgon said. “It might be presented like a show but it’s not like they’re doing tricks or going through hoops; it’s all natural for them.
“Dolphins are very social. They become attached and interested in humans. They work with the same trainers every day so they’re in tune with their needs. These interactions help provide connections that are so important.”
