Aberdeen earned a historic first Scottish Cup victory in 35 years on Saturday – and wasted little time in basking in their rivals’ misery.
The Dons beat Celtic 4-3 on penalties following a 1-1 draw to lift the trophy, but Dundee United had as much reason to feel defeated.
Aberdeen came from behind to thwart Celtic’s treble hopesGettyUnited believed the club were a shoo-in to be among the teams contesting the £10.95million prize money in the Europa League.
The Terrors downed Aberdeen 2-1 on the final day of the season to leapfrog their rivals into fourth spot in the Scottish Premiership.
Dundee United went early with their celebrations, with a taunting dig at the expense of Jimmy Thelin’s men on their social media accounts.
They then posted that the club had secured their return to the Europa League for the first time in over a decade.
That was because Dundee United had overlooked the possibility that Aberdeen could snatch that spot back in the Scottish Cup final.
The Dons, who hadn’t lifted the trophy in 35 years, were heavy underdogs against champions and reigning holders Celtic.
Celtic, who had won five of the previous seven editions of the cup, have already beaten Aberdeen 5-1 twice in three months.
The Hoops looked on course for another Scottish treble when Alfie Dorrington’s own goal just before half-time put them ahead.
However, Aberdeen rewrote the history books when Kasper Schmeichel diverted Shayden Morris’ cross into his own net late on.
Dimitar Mitov’s shootout saves from Callum McGregor and Alistair Johnston then saw Aberdeen win the cup on penalties.

As a result, European League football will return to the Pittodrie Stadium throughout the autumn.
Aberdeen have secured a place in the play-off round of the Europa League, with group stage place in the Conference their safety net.
Crucially, it also means that Dundee will enter continental competition in the Conference League second qualifying round.
Aberdeen were quick to remind their rivals of their taunts, having quote-tweeted their previous posts from earlier this month.
The club wrote: “Wee clubs finish posting on the final day of the league season…Big clubs keep posting on Scottish Cup Final Day.”
Aberdeen headed into the showpiece occasion on the back of four consecutive defeats, with a recent horror record against Celtic.

Thelin’s men had lost their last four meetings with Brendan Rodgers’ table-toppers, 5-1, 5-1, 1-0 and 6-0.
Aberdeen’s Tottenham loanee Dorrington described the unlikely triumph as the ‘best game of his life’ despite scoring an own-goal.
He exclusively told talkSPORT: “I think that’s the best game of my life, just the occasion, obviously my first senior trophy and medal. But yeah, I’m just buzzing, absolutely buzzing.”
“There’s a lot of firsts here,” the Spurs defender continued. “First goal, first cup, first red card, but it’s all the experiences I was looking for really.
“I just can’t thank the people here enough for trusting me and taking a chance on me to help improve the team.”
When asked if he would return for a second season, Dorrington replied: “I don’t know, it’s up to Tottenham.
Aberdeen had lost to Dundee on the final game of the season before beating CelticGetty“I’m a Tottenham player, obviously, while I’m here I’m an Aberdeen player, but still a Tottenham player. I love the city, love the support, love playing with these people. It’s in Tottenham’s hands really.
“We won the Europa League, and then I won the Scottish Cup.
“I got offered tickets [to Bilbao], but I had my own final to focus on. Obviously, I was supporting Tottenham.
“I got a bit emotional when they won, to be honest.
“I got a bit emotional today, but this whole week has been a blur, but I’m just buzzing from it.”
