‘Big mistake’ – Martin Bakole responds to Frank Warren’s Moses Itauma fight offer ...Middle East

Martin Bakole believes Frank Warren is making a ‘big mistake’ by mentioning him and Moses Itauma in the same sentence.

The Queensberry Promotions chief recently expressed a willingness to match the 20-year-old sensation up against Bakole this year.

Bakole is open to fighting Itauma this year

Itauma improved to 12-0 on Saturday night with a vicious second-round knockout win over former NFL linebacker Mike Balogun in Glasgow.

The Chatham boxer’s handlers are struggling to find opponents who can take their client rounds, prompting Warren and Co. to target world-level fights.

However, Bakole, who is currently ranked No.8 at heavyweight by Ring Magazine, insists it is too soon for Itauma to face him.

“Yeah, he did well tonight,” Bakole told talkSPORT of Itauma’s statement win on the Josh Taylor vs Ekow Essuman undercard.

“I know he has a big future ahead of him, but he has a long way to go.

“Having Martin Bakole’s name in his mouth is a big mistake.

“Even Frank Warren knows that I am not on his level to be honest.

“But I am looking forward to fighting for the world title, and if he wants to fight me, I don’t know what I would be fighting him for, but it is a good fight…

“I’m open to it (fighting Itauma). I’m so happy people are calling me out.

“I am going on 9 years in the UK, and no one was mentioning my name.

“But I am so glad and so proud of myself because today people are mentioning my name.

“They want to fight me. This is what I want, I want to fight.

“So if they want the fight, they will have to call BOXXER (Bakole’s promoters) and if everything is ok, then I will fight. My job is to fight.”

Bakole was once considered the boogeyman of boxing’s glamour division.

However, back-to-back setbacks have seen his stock fall considerably.

The Congolese powerhouse earned a top 10 ranking with a destructive stoppage win over the once highly-touted Jared Anderson last August.

But he undid his good work by taking a fight with Joseph Parker in February on three days’ notice with minimal preparation.

Bakole was knocked out in the second round and was then held to a draw by Efe Ajagba in his follow-up bout.

It is for this reason that Itauma prefers the idea of taking on Filip Hrgovic next, who is coming fresh off a win over Joe Joyce.

“Martin Bakole, not so much, Filip Hrgovic, yes,” he said.

“The reason I say Martin Bakole no more is because Martin Bakole was a boogeyman, then he got knocked out by Joseph Parker, and it’s brought him back a bit.

“Then he didn’t have the best performance against Efe Ajagba, and that’s brought him back a little bit more.”
