Former Indian cricketer Yograj Singh has claimed that it was due to the efforts of Yuvraj Singh that Shubman Gill became India Test captain. On Saturday, chief selector Ajit Agarkar confirmed that the Punjab batter will be Rohit Sharma’s successor as the squad for England series was announced. Gill became the 37th captain to lead an Indian side in Tests.
Gill captain because of Yuvraj?
Speaking to news agency ANI, Yograj claimed that the credit for Gill becoming captain goes to his father and Yuvraj. Dubbing his son as a “great cricketing brain,” Yograj claimed that Gill had become and will be captain for a long time essentially due to the guidance of Yuvraj.
“If Gill has become captain today and will stay for a long time, Yuvraj Singh’s guidance will play and has played a great role in that. Someone like Yuvraj, the greatest cricketing brain in the world, taking Gill under his wing is a big thing,” Yograj said.
Gill has never led the red-ball side in the past, although he did captain the T20I side in a series against Zimbabwe. He is currently leading GT in IPL 2025.
“You don’t pick Captains for 1-2 tours. You want to invest in something that is going to help us going forward. We have seen some progress in him over the last 2 years. There is no doubt, it is going to be tough doing a 5 match series in England. Maybe we will have to learn on the job a little, but we are very confident and that is the reason we are picking him,” Agarkar said in the press conference on May 24.
