A BELOVED grocery chain and Walgreens rival has set out to expand its store footprint, opening a brand new location in just days.
As Publix adds to its lineup of roughly 1,400 stores, top bosses at the grocer signaled to shoppers that more new spots are coming in the near future.

The grocery store and pharmacy chain, which shoppers have called “better than Walgreens,” is on a mission to up its presence in the Southeast.
Publix will soon open a new location in Charlotte, North Carolina, at 7 am on Wednesday, May 28, according to a local outlet.
The new spot is located at 12925 Albemarle Road in east Charlotte in the Clear Creek Crossings development.
It measures 47,000 square feet and will employ roughly 140 full- and part-time workers.
The new store comes on the heels of the grand opening of another Publix location at 11525 Carmel Commons Boulevard in Charlotte and marks the 25th Publix in the area.
The chain ranks as fourth by market share in Charlotte, following Food Lion, Harris Teeter, and Walmart in the top spot, per sales tracking firm Chain Store Guide.
Publix is working on climbing ahead, with plans to open at least five more locations in the Charlotte area.
For example, the Florida-based company is currently building a location in the Arboretum shopping center at Providence and Pineville-Matthews roads.
Plus, plans are underway for a 28,000-square-foot Publix at the 10 Tryon building on the northwest corner of Tryon and Ninth streets.
ON THE RISE
Publix is working to ramp up its market share in other states, including Florida, where the chain already has roughly 900 spots.
The company recently opened two locations in Palm Beach County, including one at The Greens shopping center in Boca Raton, located at 19595 South State Road 7.
Opened on May 1, the 33,000-square-foot store measures in notably smaller than a typical Publix, which range from 45,000 to 50,000 square feet.
A second store in the area – measuring 54,964 square feet – opened on May 8 in Palm Beach Gardens at the Promenade Shopping Plaza, located at 9900 Alternate A1A.

Publix has plans for an even bigger location in a a master-planned community near Jacksonville.
Blueprints for the 55,701-square-foot store, to be located at 1975 SilverLeaf Parkway, were approved in March, according to county records.
The property, valued at more than $13 million, will feature a Publix liquor store right next door.
Publix is also plotting the construction of a “prototype” store near Central Florida, in the Lakeland area at 4730 South Florida Avenue, a company spokesperson told a local outlet.
The store’s format will be similar to that of other prototype Publix locations in Tampa and Wesley Chapel, offering shoppers a much greater selection than an average Publix store.
“In this particular format, customers enjoy expanded offerings in the deli, like burrito bowls and a pizza oven,” said the spokesperson.
“There is also a Pours area where customers can order smoothies and acai bowls or grab a drink and sip while they shop.”
Publix is not the only popular grocery chain with expansion plans underway.
For example, Target confirmed plans to open a new store “tailored to guests” in a popular state by the end of 2026.
Meanwhile, a grocery chain “cheaper than Walmart” has set out to open 21 stores across 13 states – and more locations will be quietly added to the list.
