Lando Norris made Formula One history on Saturday as he claimed pole position for this weekend’s Monaco Grand Prix.
The McLaren superstar set a brand new track record at the Circuit de Monaco, smashing Lewis Hamilton‘s all-time fastest lap.
Norris claimed pole with an all-time record lap in MonacoGettyNorris stole back top spot for the race on Sunday afternoon in a dramatic final few moments of qualifying.
As Monaco local Charles Leclerc looked set to take pole for his home race, it was Norris who flew through with his last lap.
He crossed the line 0.109 seconds quicker than Leclerc, setting the fastest lap ever seen on the track.
Norris finished his lap in a time of 1:09:954.
Hamilton held the record for six years, following his 1:10:166time in 2019 qualifying.
That is a race that the F1 icon went on to win, and Norris will now look to replicate that success this time around.
He remained calm when responding to the news that he was on pole, saying on his team radio: “All good – thank you guys.”
But when out of the car and discussing only his second pole of the season, he told Sky Sports: “It’s been a long time coming. I feel good.
“I don’t think you realise how good this feels after quite a few struggles in the last few months.
“Monaco is a beautiful place. The hardest track to do it and up against the hometown hero.
Norris will be on pole for the race on Sunday afternoonGetty He broke Hamilton’s lap record in MonacoGetty“I’m very proud of the whole team. We have worked very hard over the past few months. Very pleased.”
Norris added: “It was a nice lap. It was a well put together lap and it feels good when you cross the line and it all pays off.”
“At the minute, I don’t care! I’m going to enjoy today. I’ve worked hard for today,” he continued. “That’s what tonight is for to prepare for tomorrow.
“I’m just very pleased with today and happy with qualifying. I will live the moment for a little bit then focus on tomorrow.”
By claiming his first pole in Monaco, Norris has also become the first McLaren driver to lead off the race since 2017.
Fernando Alonso was the last driver to achieve the feat for the team.
Norris only has one win this season and it came in the first raceGettyLeclerc will begin the race in second, with Norris’ teammate and World Championship leader Oscar Piastri in third.
As for Hamilton, who has had his record taken, he has qualified in fourth ahead of reigning world champion Max Verstappen.
However, the sport’s icon is set to be investigated for a clash with Verstappen, so he could be forced to drop down the grid.
Isack Hadjar, Alonso, Esteban Ocon, Liam Lawson and Alexander Albon make up the top ten in Monaco.
Norris will hope to turn his record-breaking pole into his second win of the season to help him catch Piastri.
He has finished on the podium six times so far, but has only managed to come away with one victory, with that being in the season opener.
The Monaco Grand Prix is scheduled to start at 2pm UK time on Sunday afternoon.
