Wrexham have confirmed that work has commenced on a brand-new pitch at the SToK Cae Ras stadium.

The Red Dragons announced this week that after securing a historic third-straight promotion, the club have begun preparations for their first Championship campaign in 43 years.

Since the end of the League One season, in which Wrexham finished second, the pitch at their stadium has been cleared.

All of the surface at the SToK Cae Ras has been removed, including the pitch, irrigation system and soil.

That has allowed the club to install a brand-new stitch pitch that will have undersoil heating and new drainage systems.

They explained that the ongoing work on the new surface, which is reported to cost £1million, includes ‘the installation of new irrigation pumps, tanks and pipework, and a gravel layer’.

After the gravel layer is in place, a lower and upper rootzone will be laid, before the pitch is seeded and stitched this summer.

Wrexham state it will create ‘a state-of-the-art, UEFA-compliant facility for first-team home matches.’

The stadium will also be able to host rugby matches and other sports games after the upgrades are made.

New drains are going to be installed around the pitch and synthetic turf will outline the main surface.

New LED boards will also be in place in front of three of the four stands at the SToK Cae Ras stadium.

Compared to the pitch that Wrexham played on last season in League One, this will move towards the stadium’s Kop by two metres.

And it’s a Kop that’s also going to have its own upgrades, albeit not for next season, but it is planned to be complete by 2026.

Work is already underway on a new 5,500 seater stand that will include safe-standing areas and hospitality suites,

It has been designed by leading architects Populous, who are best known for the state-of-the-art Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Populous and Wrexham claim that the design will amplify the noise of supporters onto the pitch and it will also include facilities for officials and players.

That will allow them to walk out from under the Kop stand, through and tunnel and onto the pitch.

The new Kop has been designed to pay homage to Wrexham’s red brick architecture, with the striking design including two Welsh dragons in each top corner.

However, there have been some fan petitions to get one part of it changed due to the similarity to the England flag.

Wrexham are embarking on a second-tier campaign for the first time in over four decades.

Manager Phil Parkinson has led the club to historic back-to-back-to-back promotions under Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.

The Hollywood stars have invested a lot of money in the club since their arrival in 2021 and it has paid off.

And a £14.3million investment in March has given them an even bigger boost heading into this summer.

Although it has not been confirmed whether that money has been used on any of the upcoming stadium upgrades.
