Angel City FC hosts Louisville in Sam Laity’s final game as interim coach ...Middle East

News by : (The Orange County Register) -

The Angel City Football Club will make a coaching change after Saturday night’s game against Racing Louisville FC.

Not as a shakeup or because of poor performances. Angel City enters the week in seventh place (4-3-2, 14 points), above the playoff line in the 14-team NWSL.

Alexander Straus is set to begin his new role as Angel City coach on June 1. His first game in charge will be June 7 against the Chicago Stars.

That means Sam Laity has one final game with the interim tag.

“Every single person at the club has been amazing since I’ve been here, and that’s not lip service,” Laity said. “That’s how I feel. That includes the players. They have been absolutely sensational from day one. They’ve taken on board what we’ve asked of them, and that’s all you can ask. Day one seems like it was 18 months ago. Things go so fast in this league.

“As far as the staff, during the time I’ve had here as the interim, have been sensational and they deserve enormous amounts of credit for the work that’s been done. While I’m the person that sits on these media calls, there’s a huge amount of people that are very influential around me and with me. A lot of credit needs to go to those guys as well. It’s not a one-man band.

“My objective coming in was to try give the team a solid foundation for when the new coach came in and I think myself and the staff we’ve done an OK job. Could it be better? Absolutely, but I think if we were able to look and fast forward and look at the period we’re at now, from early in the year, people would say that yeah this would be a pretty good outcome and if we can get to 17 points at the end of this weekend, 1.7 points on average over 10 games, puts you in the four in the league in almost every season. That would be good a pretty good foundation piece for Alex to come into.”

Laity will stay on the coaching staff after the game against Louisville (3-4-2, 11 points), moving to a senior assistant coach role.

“I’m pretty happy with the work that has been done,” Laity said. “Never going to be satisfied though, because we know, I know that, the staff and players know that there’s a lot more to come from this group.”

MORE NATIONAL TEAM DUTY

Aside from Alyssa and Gisele Thompson joining the U.S. women’s national team after the game, several other Angel City players will be heading out on international duty.

Midfielder Kennedy Fuller will leave to join the U.S. U-20s for the CONCACAF U-20’s championship in Costa Rica. That squad, which will face Guyana (May 30), Puerto Rico (June 1) and Costa Rica (June 3) in group play, will train in Florida before departing.

Goalkeeper Angelina Anderson and forward Riley Tiernan will join the U.S. U-23s for a training camp in Germany and a pair of games (May 30 and June 2).

Casey Phair will join South Korea for two games against Colombia and Breanna Norris will join the Mexico U-23 team.
