David Adelman is part physician, part Tony Robbins, and full-on Kenny Atkinson.
This was my takeaway from Josh Kroenke’s season-ending press conference Thursday regarding the boss’ view of his new coach. If Kroenke is correct — and he was about firing Michael Malone to inspire a longer playoff run — Adelman will keep stars healthier with more strategic rest, motivate the roster through collaboration and develop a bench of young players.
Adelman is a talented guy. But forgive me for thinking this will join “losing 30 pounds this summer” in the Museum of Broken Promises.
At least Adelman will get a fair shake. He was asked to fix the plane six weeks ago while it was still at cruising altitude. Now that it has landed, he can implement his philosophies and hire assistants who better complement his strengths.
The challenge, however, remains daunting. And the Nuggets made his promotion feel weird.
First, it leaked before Kroenke met the media. Secondly, why wasn’t Adelman seated next to him? Doesn’t he deserve an introductory news conference?
Plus, it would have been nice to hear from the coach, who is remarkably candid, about some of the ideas that were not implemented because of the postseason’s urgency.
Adelman must prove he can be heavy-handed with Jamal Murray in October — no more using the first two months to get in shape — and bench Michael Porter Jr. when he’s not shooting well in November. It is easy to demand accountability during the playoffs. Can he command their respect and employ meritocracy for 10 months?
Adelman earned the promotion. But the boss’ ambitious expectations make it clear his new job will be a lot harder than his old one.
Sell! Sell! Sell!: The reaction to my five-point plan for fixing the Rockies was overwhelmingly positive — with a caveat. The No. 1 suggestion was for owner Dick Monfort to sell the team.

Fans are either apathetic or furious. Selling would be celebrated as the team will soon post its 13th losing record in 15 seasons. But Monfort has no reason to get out. So, for now, it is a moot point.
Monfort is making money. And he is a favorite of MLB commissioner Rob Manfred, who views him as an important hawk in the upcoming CBA negotiations following the 2026 season. The league office focuses on franchises like the Rays and A’s, not a team that has a great stadium and good crowds. But there is no question that declining attendance will get the Rockies’ attention more than any newspaper column.

Final Word: When new ESPN analyst Michael Malone referred to Shai Gilgeous-Alexander as the MVP during a highlight Tuesday, it came across as him knowing he would win the award, not that he was his MVP over Nikola Jokic. He clarified as much on Thursday. But when he called the Thunder’s fans the best in the NBA, yes, that felt like a dig.
