Bruno Fernandes has suggested he could leave Manchester United if the club believe it is time to separate.

Fernandes captained United in their 1-0 Europa League final defeat to Tottenham in Bilbao on Wednesday night.

Brennan Johnson scored a scrappy goal to end Spurs’ 17-year wait for a trophy and inflict further misery onto their Premier League rivals.

The loss has added to a disastrous season for United as they close in on their worst ever finish in Premier League history.

And Fernandes, who has been crucial in salvaging some glory despite recent struggles, has hinted at a potential exit from Old Trafford.

Speaking after the final, the Portuguese midfielder said: “I have always been honest.

“If the club thinks it’s time to part ways because they want to do some cashing in or whatever, it’s what it is.

“Football sometimes is like this. I’ve always said I will be here until the club says to me that it’s time to go.

“I’m eager to do more, to be able to bring the club to the great days. The day that the club thinks that I’m too much or it’s time to part ways, football is like this, you never know it.

“But I’ve always said it and I keep my word in the same way.”

Speaking more on the result, he added: “It’s very sad. We wanted to win this final more than anything.

“It’s a very sad day because we’ve done some very good things in this competition until today.

Fernandes has admitted that he could leave the club if they wish to sell himGetty The 30-year-old, who has scored 98 goals for United, has interest from Saudi ArabiaGetty

“But today was the day that mattered, the most important day of the competition. It was the day we could have been in the history of the Europa League, but it’s not like that.

“And football is cruel, and it’s been our turn to lose. The players have said that this season has been unacceptable.”

United were unbeaten in the Europa League this season before the final, only for Spurs to end the 14-match run at the San Mames.

Ruben Amorim’s side came close to equalising but were denied by a stunning clearance off the line by Micky van de Ven.

Guglielmo Vicario then produced an excellent save in stoppage-time to keep out a Luke Shaw header and seal victory for Spurs.

They have now qualified for the Champions League and will face one of Paris Saint-Germain and Inter Milan in the UEFA Super Cup final.

United on the other hand will miss out on European football entirely in what is a continuation of their fall from grace.

The record 13-time Premier League winners could very well finish just above the relegation on the final day of the season this Sunday.

Amorim has won only 16 of his 41 matches across all competitions as head coach since joining from Sporting Lisbon in November.

Defeat to Spurs will only add to the pressure he faces in the hotseat at Old Trafford, although he insisted he ‘will not quit’ his job.

United’s summer transfer and rebuild plans may have taken a hit too following the Europa League final result.

A home clash against Aston Villa on Sunday offers an opportunity for them to try and keep fans onside with an improved performance.
