Santa Ana man accused of beating and killing cats misses hearing, warrant issued for his arrest ...Middle East

An Orange County judge issued a $50,000 warrant for the arrest of a 46-year-old man accused of luring multiple cats with food, only to kidnap and brutally beat many to death — after he skipped his arraignment hearing on Wednesday, May 21.

Alejandro Oliveros Acosta from Santa Ana was charged Tuesday with two felony counts of animal cruelty and theft of a companion animal. He was scheduled to be arraigned at the Central Justice Center the next morning, but did not appear in court.

“The DA’s Office requested a no-bail warrant due to the significant danger we believe the defendant poses to the public, and the violence he is accused of engaging (in). Judge Steve McGreevy rejected our request for a no-bail warrant and issued a $50,000 warrant for his arrest,” the Orange County District Attorney’s Office said in a statement.

The Santa Ana Animal Control Unit, operating under the city’s police department, received seven reports of injured and dead cats between November 2024 and April 2025. Cats were found dead or brutally injured, some with bloody faces and broken backs, in the area of West Wilshire Avenue and South Clara Street in Santa Ana.

Acosta is also accused of kidnapping Clubber, a 10-month-old Bengal Lynx cat who was stolen from his Westminster home in March. Clubber was later found unharmed and reunited with its owner. Police then issued a search warrant at the suspect’s home, where the bodies of over a dozen dead cats were discovered.

Officials have not provided an exact count of how many animals were harmed or killed by the defendant.

Acosta could face up to four years and four months in custody if convicted. He can receive an additional year if he is found guilty of possessing a controlled substance, after prosecutors alleged the defendant had meth on him when he was booked into jail.
