Syrian politician Khaled al-Abboud, a former member of the People’s Assembly, was arrested by elements of the Syrian General Security Forces without clarification on the reasons, timing, or location of his arrest.
The media office manager at the Syrian Ministry of Interior confirmed to Enab Baladi the arrest of Khaled al-Abboud, but did not mention additional details regarding the case.
Al-Abboud was not arrested in his birthplace of Daraa, as confirmed by a source in the General Security in the province to Enab Baladi, despite reports suggesting that the arrest took place there.
As of the time this news was published, the Ministry of Interior had not announced the details of al-Abboud’s arrest through its official channels.
Who is Khaled al-Abboud?
Khaled al-Abboud, born in Daraa in 1963, is known for his pro-regime positions. Over the past 14 years, he has frequently appeared in local and Arab media, participating in promoting the Assad regime’s narrative regarding the events in Syria since 2011.
From 2008 to 2024, al-Abboud served as a member of the Syrian People’s Assembly representing the Socialist Unionist Party from Daraa province.
During the Syrian revolution, al-Abboud led several Syrian parliamentary, party, cultural, and intellectual delegations to participate in various conferences, seminars, and associations both Arab and foreign, and he was a key participatory member in more than one Arab and national research conference and committee, as well as in several intellectual research bodies.
Operations against Assad regime’s affiliates
The Ministry of Interior announces almost daily the arrest of officers and individuals linked to the previous Syrian regime, involved in crimes against Syrians, the most prominent being military officers, elements, or military doctors.
However, it has not taken action against personalities who promoted or contributed to forwarding the regime’s narrative regarding events in Syria, aside from the arrest of former Mufti Ahmad Hassoun.
At the end of March, activists circulated news that Enab Baladi was unable to confirm regarding the arrest of the former Mufti of Syria, Ahmad Hassoun, while he was leaving the country. He is known for his support of the former regime, to the point that Syrians nicknamed him “the Mufti of Barrels,” in reference to the barrel bombs used by the Assad regime to kill the people.
On May 6, the Damascus Security Directorate arrested Dr. Bassam Youssef Salman Ali, one of the officers working at the Tishreen Military Hospital during the era of the previous regime, who was involved in the killing of detainees.
The Ministry of Interior also announced, on May 5, the arrest of a colonel in the Republican Guard affiliated with the previous Syrian regime, accused of committing crimes and violations.
