Major winner went on 15-minute public rant in front of Rory McIlroy after ‘f****** pathetic’ PGA Championship ...Middle East

Collin Morikawa had three apt words to describe his miserable time at the PGA Championship… ‘Pathetic f****** golf’.

That is what the 28-year-old is reported to have said to his coach and caddie after signing for a final round of 72, that saw him finish a lowly tied-50th at Quail Hollow.

Morikawa was the 2020 champion, but it was not to be for him in the second major of the year.

He flirted with a challenge early on, carding a one-under-par first round, but never got going.

Golf.com report that he made that comment very much out in the open.

His frustrations lasted for a good 15 minutes as players like Rory McIlroy passed through.

McIlroy himself had been silent all week to reporters about how he was doing at the PGA Championship.

Morikawa’s frustrations are understandable, he dropped three shots on the 18th hole across the week.

On the final round alone, he made six bogeys to go along with the five birdies.

“I don’t try and be harsh like that,” Morikawa he told Golf.com. “But you just have to talk things through. I don’t think people do that enough with their team around them. They kind of internalise it. Sometimes you just got to let out your frustration.

“It’s small things,” he said. “Because I know this game is so — everything is just by the thread of a needle, right? Small margins could mean big results. At the end of the day, I can live with bad golf. But bad golf to me is poor swings, you know, and poor execution.

“When I am giving away shots that I feel like I shouldn’t — and me being, I feel like, a mentally strong player — that’s what’s frustrating.

“I set high standards for myself, and when you don’t reach them, sometimes you go a little crazy.

“But sometimes it wakes you up. For me, at the end of the day, it’s like, how do I just wake up a little bit more, to be firing.

“You can see the competitiveness in Scottie, right? You can really see that through. That’s what I need to kind of pull out of myself again, because that’s what I had when I first came out.”

It was a special week for Scottie Scheffler, however, as he claimed his third major championship.

He overcame the challenge of Jon Rahm to seal victory at Quail Hollow.

“This is a special tournament,” Scheffler said.

Scheffler will head back to Texas as a three-time major winnerGetty

“Any time you can win a major championship is pretty cool and I’m proud of how I did this week just staying in it mentally and hitting the shots when I needed to.

“This back nine will be one that I remember for a long time. It was a grind out there. I think at one point on the front, I maybe had a four or five-shot lead, and making the turn I think I was tied for the lead.

“So to step up when I needed to the most, I’ll remember that for a while.

“I always try to lean as much as I can on my mind. I think that’s probably my greatest strength.

“Today and this week I really just feel like I did just such a good job of staying patient when I wasn’t swinging it my best but I hit the shots when I needed to.

“I hit the important shots well this week, and that’s why I’m walking away with the trophy.”
