With the Government warning that we should be on a pre-war footing in these dangerous times, the development of a new Home Guard appears set to form part of our future defence. There is also expected to be spending on new drones, lest you worry that 21st-century Corporal Joneses aren’t likely to keep Russian hordes at bay for long.
After all, having watched every episode of Dad’s Army several times over, I’m very ready to do my bit. And if that means scanning the skies for enemy activity above Sizewell B, I reckon I am up to the task.
I see myself in the Private Godfrey role, handing out tea and kind words, and occasionally a bandage – and requiring a hand should my dodgy hip make it hard to get into the trenches.

Even in times past, building civilian militias in this country has proved challenging. Only in the Second World War, when the general population genuinely feared an invasion, was it possible to muster a significant force.
Then again, the Government presumably doesn’t want one in five adults to sign up this time. What’s more, even the history of the Home Guard’s most famous iteration should provide a warning of how a volunteer army can become a political headache.
As the war went on, the Home Guard became more practically valuable – manning anti-aircraft batteries, for instance – and yet much of its evolution was driven by the same thing that had led to its establishment: public pressure. All sorts of additional kit were developed because leading members of the organisation leaned loudly on ministers, rather than because there was a real need for it.
So, if you feel troubled by the present global uncertainty, just think of your friendly greengrocer in his camouflage, your local undertaker with her night-vision goggles, and me with a first aid kit and binoculars – all on guard against enemies unknown. And don’t panic
