A 52-year-old Hawthorne man was sentenced Wednesday, May 21, to 40 years to life in state prison for gunning down an innocent bystander outside a North Long Beach liquor store in 2022, authorities said.
Kelly Anderson Bayloe was convicted by jury last month of second-degree murder and being a felon in possession of a firearm in the April 1, 2022 fatal shooting of 46-year-old Ryan Pearson just outside Don’s Liquor Store at Long Beach Boulevard and Barclay Street, prosecutor Karen Brako said in April.
Bayloe had approached a group of men outside the liquor store and an argument ensued over Bayloe leaving a street gang, but still hanging out in its neighborhood, Brako said.
He left, but returned minutes later with a handgun and fired four times at one of the people he argued with, Brako said. Simultaneously, Pearson was walking into the liquor store and was shot in the back, collapsing in the doorway.
Pearson died at a hospital.
Bayloe fled following the shooting, but was found and arrested three days later in Inglewood and has remained in custody since, according to police and inmate records.
He was tied to the shooting after police learned he was seen drinking from a beer can and throwing it away in the trash when he first arrived at the store, Brako said. Fingerprints and DNA on the can led police to identify Bayloe as the shooter.
