Former Indian cricketer Harbhajan Singh reportedly had a huge role to play in the shifting of IPL 2025 playoff matches to Mullanpur. On Tuesday, the BCCI confirmed that the final will be moved from Kolkata to Ahmedabad while Qualifier 1 and Eliminator will be held in Mullanpur. Now, a report has shed light on how Harbhajan was instrumental in ensuring that New Chandigarh got the rights to host the playoff matches.
Harbhajan’s role in Mullanpur hosting IPL 2025 playoffs
As per IANS, Harbhajan reportedly pushed very hard for Mullanpur to host Qualifier 1 and the Eliminator. He reportedly convinced the decision makers that the venue was ready, both in terms of facilities and turnout of fans.
“Harbhajan pushed hard for it. He convinced key decision-makers that New Chandigarh is ready, both in terms of facilities and audience enthusiasm. He wasn’t just lobbying; he was deeply involved in inspection visits, pitch discussions, and logistical planning,” a source claimed.
Mullanpur has served as one of the home grounds of Punjab Kings (PBKS) in IPL 2025. The venue hosted four matches so far in this season.
Gujarat Titans, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, and Punjab Kings have sealed their playoff spots. Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals are fighting for the remaining spot. If PBKS manages a top-2 finish, they will play Qualifier 1 at their home ground.
Initially, the IPL 2025 final was scheduled to be held on May 25 in Kolkata. However, the league was suspended for seven days owing to tensions between India and Pakistan. As a result, a revised schedule forced the final to be moved out from Kolkata owing to forecast of rain around June 3.
