buy from amazonI’m what you would call a bag lady. I love finding interesting bags, especially when they have a well-defined purpose. In the past few years, I’ve mostly been looking at camera backpacks and computer bags, so I was excited to try out the Alpaka Metro Tote. First, I’ve never tried anything from Alpaka, but I liked their style. Second, it’s a multi-purpose bag that can handle anything from daily errands to business trips. So, let’s take a look at the Alpaka Metro Tote.
Get to Know Alpaka
Like I said, I wasn’t overly familiar with Alpaka’s gear, and when that happens, I like to do a little background research so that I can get to know the company behind the gear.
Alpaka is an Australian bag and accessories company that was founded in 2016. Its first product, the 7ven Messenger Bag, launched through Kickstarter, and the company has since expanded to include backpacks, sling bags, tech organizers, and many more accessories for everyday use.
Alpaka was named for the alpaca because of their ability to adapt to a wide range of habitats. This resilience and adaptability play into the company’s design philosophy: Keep Moving Forward.
The company is committed to sustainability, utilizing eco-friendly materials like recycled fabrics and weatherproof textiles. Alpaka is a member of 1% for the Planet, donating a portion of its revenue to environmental non-profits such as One Tree Planted and the Surfrider Foundation.

What It’s Like to Carry the Metro Tote
Right from the start, the Metro Tote impressed me with its build. The materials feel solid and well-made, which is exactly what I want in a daily bag. I try not to carry everything but the kitchen sink with me, but I want my daily carry to be able to handle that.
The straps are made from a seatbelt-style material, and honestly, they might be my favorite part of the design. They’re smooth, strong, and don’t show wear easily. The stitching and overall construction feel very deliberate, like someone actually thought through how this bag was going to be used every day. It doesn’t feel cheap, and if you’ve tried your fair share of bags like I have, you know that’s not always a given.
Even though the straps aren’t padded, they sit well in the hand or over the shoulder. I’ve carried it around quite a bit without it digging in or feeling awkward. Now, when I load it down (which I tend to do), it does start to feel a bit heavy—but that’s more about how much I pack than the tote itself.
I have the green version of the tote, and visually, it just works. It’s sleek, not too flashy, and looks good whether I’m dressed up a bit or just running errands. That said, I probably wouldn’t take it to a formal event like a black-tie affair or a board meeting.
Even when it’s full, it keeps its shape well. I could set it on my desk with just my 16-inch MacBook Pro and AirPods Max inside, and it didn’t tip over or collapse. There’s a small leather “Alpaka” tag on the front, and I love that the branding isn’t in your face.
As far as organization goes, the Metro Tote does a good job of keeping things tidy. It’s got dedicated sleeves for a laptop and tablet, plus a few accessory pockets. The layout makes sense and keeps everything accessible. That said, if your laptop or tablet has a thicker case, you might find the sleeves a bit snug.
I got my 16-inch MacBook Pro (in a case) and my iPad Pro with a Smart Keyboard in there, but just barely. After adding my AirPods Max, there wasn’t much space left for a full-size tech pouch. I ended up tossing in some cables and smaller accessories instead.
The water bottle pocket on the outside is convenient, but it’s only large enough to accommodate a 20-ounce bottle. I like to carry my 26-ounce Yeti Rambler, and I just couldn’t get it to fit. The outer pockets are also super handy. I can easily fit my iPhone 16 Pro with a PopSocket in one and still have room for small essentials.
For how I work and travel, this bag fits nicely into my rotation. It slides behind the passenger seat in my car without any issues, and based on the dimensions, it should meet most airline carry-on standards. In fact, it’s small enough to count as a personal item on many airlines, which is a bonus if you’re trying to fly light.
Overall, I feel like Alpaka nailed the balance between function and style with this one. At $95, it feels like a solid investment, especially when you compare it to other totes that are either more expensive or less thoughtfully designed.
Final Thoughts
The Alpaka Metro Tote is the kind of bag that quietly gets the job done without demanding too much attention. It looks good, carries well, and holds up to the daily shuffle of work, errands, and travel. While it won’t replace a full-on tech backpack or a formal briefcase, it fills the gap in between with confidence and ease. If you’re looking for something sleek, practical, and well-made that doesn’t scream “I’m a laptop bag,” this one’s worth checking out.
