Manchester City must dust themselves down after disappointment in losing the FA Cup final to Crystal Palace on Saturday, and turn their attention quickly back on the Premier League and their bid to qualify for next season’s Champions League.
Pep Guardiola’s side dropped down to sixth place in the Premier League table following the weekend’s results, leaving them needing realistically four points from their final two matches to be certain of playing in Europe’s elite club competition next season.
Just one point separates third and seventh in the Premier League table after Sunday’s results, though the Citizens do have the benefit of having Tuesday night’s game in hand, which can take them two points clear of Aston Villa, who would be on the chopping block should City win, while also boasting a much healthier goal difference.
City will be determined to sign off what has been a difficult season with a win in front of their home fans in their final game at the Etihad of the campaign on Tuesday night, and are in strong form on their own patch having won their last four games at the Etihad.
Bournemouth head into the final week of the season still with a remote chance of securing themselves European football for the first time in the club’s history.
Andoni Iraola’s side head into tonight’s game 11th in the Premier League table, five points behind Brighton in the all important eighth place, with the Cherries with two games still to play compared to all the sides around them who only have one.
Eighth place will take the Premier League’s final spot in Europe next season if Chelsea finish seventh and win the Conference League, or if Chelsea finish sixth, win the Conference League, while Newcastle finish seventh.
The Cherries must win at the Etihad tonight to have any chance of finishing in the top eight, and must get back to winning ways after their five match unbeaten run came to an end with a home defeat at Aston Villa last weekend.
Only three teams have picked up more points away from home in the Premier League this season than the Dorset side, losing only one of their last 13 matches on the road since the start of November, and became only the second visiting team to win at the Emirates in the league this season in their most recent away outing.
Bournemouth have only beaten Manchester City once in their history, across 23 meetings, of which City have won 20, though the Cherries’ sole win did come earlier this season at the Vitality Stadium, but have lost on each of their last nine away games against tonight’s opponents.
