Mark Allen was in no mood to wait.

Allen had just missed the opportunity to take the 13th frame and a 7-6 lead in his 2023 World Snooker Championship semi-final against Mark Selby.

Under normal circumstances, a player will return to their seat after missing a shot.

Instead, Allen took a different approach that had the audience cackling.

As Selby walked around the table and prepared to take his shot, he was greeted by Allen, who remained standing.

Allen then nodded towards the table as if to tell his rival to get a wriggle on.

The 39-year-old’s cheeky gesture drew a round of laughs as Selby continually looked back at his rival.

Even the referee struggled to hide his smirk.

But if Allen thought his nod to hurry Selby along would distract his rival, it proved fruitless.

Selby showed plenty of composure to pot the pink and bring an end to the session.

It completed an impressive fightback from Selby, who found himself down 5-3 earlier but had kicked into gear and ended the session with a 7-6 lead.

Unfortunately for Allen, he was unable to regain control of the contest when the semi-final resumed the following day.

Although he fought back from 16-10 to make it 16-15 and set up a grandstand finish, Allen could not find the extra gear as Selby held firm to win 17-15 to progress to the final.

For Allen, it marked a heartbreaking end to what was just his second World Championship semi-final berth in 14 years.

Speaking after the contest, the Northern Irishman expressed his disappointment for how the tournament ended, but took comfort in how well he’d played over the course of the season.

“I didn’t have any form at all in that match but I never gave up and gave myself a chance,” Allen told BBC Sport.

“I put Mark [Selby] under a bit of pressure and will take a few positives out of that. I felt like I underperformed.

“I’m disappointed right now but the season as a whole has been really good with my highest ever ranking and back to the one-table set-up here so the signs are good for next season.”

As for Selby, his bid to win a fifth world title at the Crucible fell at the last hurdle.

The 41-year-old was beaten 18-15 by Belgium’s Luca Brecel, who has described himself as the ‘Ronaldinho of snooker’, in the final.
