SANTA CLARITA — An off-duty Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy was killed in a multi-vehicle collision in Santa Clarita on Monday.
Officers responded to the collision on San Francisquito Canyon Road, south of Dry Gulch Road, shortly after 3:15 p.m., where three vehicles sustained significant damage and several victims were injured, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Emergency first responders arrived at the location to begin administering aid to the injured victims, one of whom was an off-duty sheriff’s deputy who sustained critical injuries.
The deputy was airlifted to Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital, where he later died. The other victims were taken to the same facility by ambulance.
CHP officers temporarily diverted traffic as emergency crews assisted with clearing the scene and ensuring the safety of all victims.
The cause of the collision remained under investigation Monday evening.
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of this deputy, our thoughts are with his family, friends and the entire Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department during this incredibly difficult time. We honor his service and commitment to our community,” CHP Capt. E. A. Krusey said in a statement.
