Pillion marks a significant departure for Melling, casting him in a role worlds away from the wizarding world's surly cousin. He plays Colin, an introverted parking attendant, opposite Alexander Skarsgård's Ray, a charismatic gay biker. The film, the debut feature from writer-director Harry Lighton, delves into their dynamic.
According to the official synopsis: “Colin, a timid man, meets Ray, a confident biker gang leader, who initiates him into a submissive relationship, challenging Colin's mundane existence and prompting personal growth through their unconventional dynamic.” The project, featuring explicit sex scenes and "wild costumes," clearly captivated the discerning Cannes audience, who responded with rapturous applause that echoed through the prestigious venue for a full eight minutes.
The Cannes Film Festival interviewed Lighton about his experience with Melling on the set of the film. “As anyone who’s worked with Harry Melling knows, he’s an incredibly warm and generous actor,” said Lighton. “He really threw himself into the role of Colin – practising Barbershop, learning wrestling moves, shaving his head. He fizzes with this very unusual brand of charisma that’s totally magnetic but not remotely alpha.”
Pelling will be released by A24 at an undisclosed date.
