The Bastrop County Emergency Food Pantry tells KXAN that growing demand, high prices and imminent shortages are straining local resources. It called out for community support so it can continue to help Bastrop County families.

“Our rural community is facing challenges on all sides,” said Tresha Silva, the pantry's executive director, in a press release. “We are not just seeing more people in need—we are seeing deeper levels of hunger as families struggle with inflation, reduced federal assistance, and now, the very real threat of food shortages this summer."

As much as 45% of the Bastrop County Emergency Food Pantry’s food supply comes from the Central Texas Food Bank. According to the pantry, the Central Texas Food Bank recently lost $5.5 million in funding, which would have funded more than 750,000 meals.

“The Pantry is in the midst of a capital campaign to expand its food storage and distribution capacity to one million pounds of food—a vital step in protecting against future shortages,” the release states.
