Michael van Gerwen’s ‘race is run’ at the top level of darts.
That’s the view of two-time Major winner Colin Lloyd, who has had his say on MVG with the three-time world champion on the brink of missing the Premier League play-offs for just the second time in his illustrious career.
Van Gerwen has struggled for form in recent yearsGetty MVG is on the cusp of failing to reach the Premier League play-offsPAA loss to Nathan Aspinall in the quarter-final on night 15 last Thursday, coupled with ‘The Asp’ going on to win in Aberdeen, has left Van Gerwen four points outside of the play-offs.
With the winner of a Premier League night earning five points, not only must Van Gerwen win night 16 in the Premier League, he has to hope Aspinall loses in the quarter-final if he is to seal an unlikely play-offs berth.
Van Gerwen has also not won a PDC ranked televised event since November 2022, when he won the Players Championship Finals in Minehead.
Given the 36-year-old had won at least one ranked televised event each year from 2012 to 2022 with the exception of 2021, the lack of success in recent years has alarm bells ringing.
And Lloyd, who faced Van Gerwen in his prime and on 19 occasions, questioned whether his former rival still has the competitive fire within.
“I think his race is run,” Lloyd said on the talkBULL Podcast.
“With what he’s achieved in the game, is he that motivated anymore?
“He says he is. He says there’s plenty left it in him and that when he turns up, he’s still the man to beat and one of the best players in the world.
“I’m sorry, but I’ve got to say we haven’t seen Michael turn up for a while now. We’ve seen flashes of brilliance.
“Has it slipped into his head he has other priorities? He loves spending time with the missus and the kids going on holiday.”

“He’ll turn up and he’s got all the good intentions of how a champion is. You don’t turn up to make the numbers up, you turn up to win.”
But if Lloyd thought Van Gerwen would be stepping away from the oche any time soon, he’d be sorely mistaken.
Last December at the World Championships, Van Gerwen vowed to ‘be on the scene for a little bit longer’.
“If you look at my rankings this year, I’m still in the top four or five,” Van Gerwen said.
“Can you imagine when I play well again? I will be really dangerous.”
Van Gerwen has vowed to continue playing for another decadeGettyThe Dutchman added: “I’ve re-signed my contract with Winmau for another ten years, so I will be on the scene for a little bit longer and I enjoy what I do. That’s the only thing that counts.
“If I don’t win another two or three world titles, I will be disappointed. But I know I can do it.”
Van Gerwen has been a staple on the PDC circuit since 2007 and has won an astonishing 47 major titles.
However, the Dutchman has not won a single televised tournament in 2024 or in 2025, meaning his claims about future world titles appear closer to a dream rather than reality.
