Biden's prostate cancer diagnosis: 'aggressive form

Joe Biden's recent diagnosis of aggressive prostate cancer has raised significant concerns regarding his health and future. The malignancy, classified with a Gleason score of 9 out of 10, indicates a high-grade cancer that has metastasized to the bones . While such a diagnosis typically suggests a poor prognosis, it is noteworthy that the cancer is hormone-sensitive. This characteristic allows for potential management through hormonal therapies, which may improve survival outcomes for many patients.

Biden, 82, and his family “are reviewing treatment options with his physicians,” the statement said.

Biden said the former president was recently evaluated for a “small nodule” discovered on his prostate.

“Prostate cancer is very common,” said Dr. Jamin Brahmbhatt, a urologist and robotic surgeon with Orlando Health and an assistant professor at the University of Central Florida’s College of Medicine, who is not involved in Biden’s treatment. “As we get older, most men are going to have little cancer cells in them.”

Former vice president, Kamala Harris also shared her thoughts on social media, offering her support, she said, "Joe is a fighter — and I know he will face this challenge with the same strength, resilience, and optimism that have always defined his life and leadership," Harris said.

Prostate cancer typically grows slowly, and early detection and treatment before symptoms appear may not improve health or longevity. However, even when advanced, it is often treatable. According to the NIH, approximately 12.9% of men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime, and an estimated 3.5 million men in the U.S. were living with the disease in 2022. The median age at diagnosis is 68, while the median age at death is 79. While new cases have increased by an average of 1.8% annually from 2013 to 2022, death rates have decreased by an average of 0.6% annually from 2014 to 2023.

The announcement of Biden's condition follows symptoms related to urinary function and the discovery of a prostate nodule . Given the aggressive nature of this disease and its progression to bone metastasis, it remains unclear how this will impact his public duties and responsibilities.
