Diamondbacks RHP Justin Martinez to pitch in Reno on Tuesday ...Middle East

PHOENIX — Arizona Diamondbacks right-handed reliever Justin Martinez will pitch for Triple-A Reno on Tuesday, manager Torey Lovullo said pregame Sunday.

“I did speak to J-Mart. He’s in a good spot, he feels like he’s getting very, very close,” Lovullo said. “The velo is ticking up. He touched 99 (mph) in the ACL game.

“I think everybody wants to know why he’s not throwing 100 miles an hour, but he’s gonna get there. Everything’s trending in a very positive direction, I feel like, with the extra couple days worth of rest, getting up to Reno, getting to a hot, live situation … I think things might spike up a little bit.”

Lovullo said the group will reassess Martinez when he returns to Phoenix on Wednesday while the team is in Los Angeles wrapping up a series against the Dodgers. The team has an off day Thursday before travelling to begin a three-game set at the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday.

Martinez has trusted the process the Diamondbacks have laid out for the reliever’s recovery, Lovullo added.

“He’s been feeling very good through the whole rehab process,” the manager said. “He has been feeling no pain, no discomfort. We’re just trying to figure out where that extra velocity will come from, and for me, I’m minimally concerned.

“I know he averaged over 100 miles an hour with his fastball last year. It’s not quite there right now, but we’ll figure this out with him. … After the outing, we’ll figure out what the next steps are.”

How will Justin Martinez be eased back into bullpen?

Lovullo emphasized patience with how Martinez returns to play.

“He’s gonna find himself on the back end,” the manager said. “I want to maybe get him a real smooth, early landing spot — but that doesn’t always happen — and let him just migrate and take it from there.”

He added a reactive approach to reintegrating injured players can have a negative impact on players’ mindsets.

“We know that he’s healthy and he’s coming. We’re gonna find the right slot for him at the right times,” Lovullo said.

Diamondbacks’ starting pitchers vs. Dodgers

Ryne Nelson was confirmed as the starter filling in to Eduardo Rodriguez’s spot on Tuesday at the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Brandon Pfaadt will open the series for Arizona with Corbin Burnes wrapping it up. Neither allowed a run in their last respective outings against the divisional rival (combined to allow six hits and six walks across 13.1 innings).

Los Angeles had not yet posted probable starters as of Sunday morning.

Catch Sunday’s rubber match against the Colorado Rockies at 1:10 p.m. MST and the entire Dodgers series on 98.7, the Arizona Sports app or online.
