In recent weeks, it had become something of a running joke: “Imagine if Arsenal end up finishing third.” What had initially started as a tongue-in-cheek remark threatened to become reality. Coming into the game with just one win in their last six Premier League matches, Mikel Arteta’s side risked being leapfrogged by Newcastle with a defeat at the Emirates.
But Declan Rice ensured that wouldn’t happen.
His thunderous second-half strike not only sealed a 1-0 win at the Emirates but confirmed Arsenal‘s return to the UEFA Champions League next season.
Despite the lack of goals in the opening 45 minutes, there was no shortage of action. The fact it remained goalless was down to the quality of the two goalkeepers.
Newcastle started with intent, slicing through Arsenal’s midfield repeatedly in the opening stages. David Raya was called into action five times in the first 20 minutes alone. He produced excellent saves from Bruno Guimarães and Harvey Barnes, but his standout moment came when he denied Dan Burn’s point-blank header with a stunning reflex stop, then recovered to clear Sven Botman’s follow-up off the line.
At the other end, Nick Pope was sharp too. Arsenal’s best chance of the half came from a set-piece, with Thomas Partey’s close-range header drawing a brilliant save to keep the scores level.
Newcastle’s five shots on target in the first half were the most Arsenal had faced in any Premier League game since April 2023, when Manchester City managed six. By half-time, seven of Newcastle’s 10 outfield players had attempted a shot.
While Arsenal looked stilted in open play during the first half, the Gunners came out for the second half with renewed urgency – just as they had in last weekend’s draw with Liverpool.
The breakthrough came courtesy of Rice, whose ball-striking this season has reached a new level. Receiving a square pass from Martin Ødegaard just outside the box, he whipped a fierce shot past Pope into the bottom corner. That strike was his 16th for Arsenal in all competitions – already surpassing the 15 he managed in 245 appearances for West Ham.
It was also Arsenal’s first goal against Newcastle this season, with what was their 52nd shot across their four games in all competitions. They pushed hard for a second, with Bukayo Saka and Ben White going close.
Newcastle failed to register a single shot in the second half until the 75th minute, when Barnes – leaning back – blazed his effort over the bar. They sorely missed Alexander Isak’s movement and finishing up front, and have yet to win a Premier League match this season when the Swede hasn’t started (D2 L2).
Newcastle will need a result against Everton next week to confirm Champions League football. Despite this defeat, they remain in third and are still in a strong position heading into the final day.
As for Arsenal, they maintain their impressive home record against Newcastle – just one defeat in their last 21 Premier League meetings at the Emirates (W18 D2 L1). They’ve almost certainly secured a third consecutive top-two finish under Arteta and will play among Europe’s elite once more in 2025-26.
