BANKERS HILL – After being closed several months for renovations, the Hob Nob Hill restaurant had an invitation-only opening recently under new owners.“The soft opening went very well today,” said Jennifer Barragan, the newly appointed manager. “The customers are happy to be back, and we’re happy to see them. It’s like they’re family coming home to eat.”
Hob Knob Hill has been serving San Diego since 1944. To commemorate that historic event, a special menu was printed for a one-day-only occasion. It’s identical to the menu given to customers when the local eatery first opened, with prices to match: bacon, two eggs with biscuits and gravy — $3.95, Denver omelet — $5.95, and coffee only $2. In those days, an entire family could feast for $35.
“I had prime rib and a stack of pancakes and espresso for about $10,” Randy Lindert said.
His sister, Kathy Kindade, said she had eggs Benedict and a waffle, “and it was only $6.”
The $5 breakfast isn’t here to stay, but the new menu will serve up a lot of old favorites along with new dishes.“I’ve been coming to the Hob Knob for about 45 years,” Stephanie Carftensen said. “I lived down the street when I was in my early 20s working for PSA airlines. I would stop here and have breakfast before going to work. I like the new look, but I do miss the Wizard Of Oz mural on the back wall. But that was the signature that didn’t represent the new owners. I think they just wanted to up scale things a bit.”Fritz Ofner is another member of the unofficial Hob Knob fan club. “I’ve been coming here for more than two decades,” Ofner said. “The staff knows your name. It’s like I am family and not just a customer. I am happy seeing a few servers like Jen, Fabby and Jeannette are still here.”
The remodeled Hob Knob Hill had a few cosmetic changes, but customers said the one thing that has remained the same is the quality of the food and the way customers are welcomed like family.Address: 2271 First Ave., San Diego, CA 92101
